Dentist In Bakersfield, CA Can Restore Damaged Teeth

A crown treatment is used by our top dentist in Bakersfield, CA to treat a damaged tooth by restoring the tooth its original shape or appearance or function.  A crown treatment is also done after a root canal, a very large filling or in the case of a chipped tooth.

The Crown Treatment Procedure

A crown treatment usually takes three visits.  The initial visit where the dentist takes the impression and fits a temporary crown, the second visit where the dentist fits the custom made crown using temporary cementation and the final visit where the dentist applies permanent cementation to fit the crown in place.

Initial Visit: Preparing the Tooth

The treatment starts off by your dentist giving you a local anesthetic. The tooth being treated with the crown needs to be filed to make room for the crown to fit in place.  An impression of the mouth is taken to project the natural shape and form of the natural undamaged tooth. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where the technician will custom make your crown.  Your dentist will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it while the final crown is being prepared. The temporary crown will not be the same as the final crown being prepared in the laboratory as it won’t have the same shape, color or robustness as a final crown.

Second Visit: Crown Fitting

On your second visit, your dentist takes off the temporary crown and puts on the custom made crown. Your dentist checks to make sure the crown is the right fit, shape, color and bite.  If it is, your dentist cements the crown into place using a temporary cementation.

Third Visit: Post-Op Checkup

You will return to see the dentist in Bakersfield, CA after a few months for the third and final visit for a check-up and a permanent cementation of the crown once the dentist has determined that the crown is a good fit.

Different types of crowns

Crowns are made from various types of materials. There are metal crowns, composite crowns, and porcelain crowns. Depending on which tooth needs a crown, your dentist will suggest a material, or combination of materials, that is right for you.

How do I take care of my crown?

If taken good care of a crown can last for at least ten years.  It must be brushed, flossed and maintained as though it is the natural tooth. Contact our dental office in California to learn more information about crowns.
